book royalty calculator
Authors receive a percentage of net sales in accordance with the terms of their contract. These royalties are determined using a basic formula:
Net Sales = Retail Price – (Printing Costs + Discounts)
Retail Price: This is an agreed-upon list price for each format (hardcover, paperback, and eBook). When choosing a retail price, we urge you to consider the price range of comparable titles, not just profit margins.
Wholesale Discount: This is a discount offered to retailers who purchase in bulk. Typically this discount will be 35-50% off the Retail Price depending on the type of retailer.
Printing Cost: There are many factors that can affect printing costs. Some of these include binding type, trim size, page and ink type. We work in partnership with our authors to meet expectations around quality and profitability.
